WaveShare 7.4 E-Paper will not respond to sample code

I have tried to set up the "7.5inch e-Paper HAT (B)" on both the raspberry pi 5 and raspberry pi zero 2w with HAT connection and direct pin connection and have tried the example files and have not been able to get the display to respond.

Can you offer any suggestions or updated setup instructions.
