Summary
Vortex now requires
drupal/fast_404and its settings override resolves, so a site answers requests for missing files fromsettings.fast_404.phpwithout bootstrapping Drupal. The file was renamed fromsettings.fast404.phpbecause the installer keys modules by Composer package name, and the guard it wraps now reads$contrib_path . '/fast_404/fast404.inc', the path that Composer'stype:drupal-modulemapping actually produces.The guard checked
'/fast404/fast404.inc'without the underscore, a path that mapping never creates, sofile_exists()was always false, everyfast404_*setting stayed unset andfast404_preboot()was never called. Nothing looked broken because Drupal core runs its ownfast_404over the same extension list fromsystem.performance, and its error page differs only in the DOCTYPE and in printing the full request URL instead of the path. The difference that mattered was invisible: core's handler runs after a full bootstrap, this one runs fromsettings.phpbefore one, which is the cost behind the 35.5% of PHP time spent on 404s over a 7 day window on the site that reported this. The package was also absent fromcomposer.json, so the override was scaffolding for a module no project had.After merge,
/missing.pngreturns the body configured in$settings['fast404_html']and never reaches Drupal, while/robots.txtstill returns 200 from therobotstxtmodule. That second case was broken by the same repair: with the guard fixed,fast404_extsbegan intercepting/robots.txt, because its(?!robots)lookahead sits at^while the module matches a path that starts with/. The pattern now matches the module's own default,(?!\/robots)^(?!\/system\/files), which also keeps the preboot handler off Drupal's private file route.fast404_string_whitelistingis dropped, anddrupal/fast_404is never enabled as a Drupal module - the handler runs before the module system exists, so requiring the package is the whole installation.Before / After
